Sharla first put foot to pedal when she was seven years old in the beginning sewing project in 4-H. Soon she was crafting clothing for herself throughout Jr. and Sr. high school, even making her bridesmaids' dresses for her wedding. But she was in her 30's before she discovered quilting and thus started her love affair with textiles and how to cut them up and sew them back together - something her hubby has never understood! Her love of fabric (and her profession in economic development) led her to open a quilt shop with her mom and three other partners in 2009. As a quilt shop owner, Sharla honed her quilting skills, began teaching classes and designing patterns, and discovered the business world of quilting. It was at Quilt Market that she was introduced to the term "surface pattern designer" and set her sights on being one herself one day.
Sharla retired from the economic development field and sold her share of the quilt shop to pursue her creative dreams - and to spoil her new grandchildren. Sharla is currently creating her first portfolio of pattern collections and continuing her education through such classes as Bonnie Christine's Surface Pattern Design Immersion course. Sharla also enjoys designing quilt patterns and has a few featured as a Chef on the Moda Bake Shop website and in Moda Bake Shop books: Best of Moda Bake Shop, Did Someone Say Cake and Rollin' Along. She is also a member of Bonnie Christine's Flourish Surface Design Group.
Sharla and her husband live on their fourth generation organic wheat farm in western Kansas, where they raised their two children. Now empty-nesters, they enjoy traveling and camping together during the farm's off-season.
